Mercedes-Benz has used three kinds of electric drive. Knowing which one your car has helps you pick the right manual and the right procedures.
The battery is charged by the engine and by braking, so there is nothing to plug in.
We cover the S400 Hybrid (2009 to 2013), E300 and E400 Hybrid (2012 to 2016), and ML450 Hybrid (2009 to 2011).
Battery-electric only, with no engine.
We cover the B-Class Electric Drive (sold as the B250e in the US), 2015 to 2019.
These cars carry high-voltage systems, marked by orange cables. Follow the high-voltage safety and shut-down steps for your model before starting any work, and leave high-voltage repairs to someone trained for them.
Your chassis code is the quickest way to pick the right manual. On a Mercedes-Benz VIN, the 4th to 6th characters give the model series: for example, a VIN beginning WDD205… is a W205 C-Class, which includes the C350e and C300e plug-in hybrids.
The VIN is printed at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side, on the door pillar sticker and on your registration. Not sure? Send us your VIN and we will point you to the right manual.
Your manual is software-based: it runs inside a virtual machine on a Windows, Linux or Mac desktop or laptop, and step-by-step install instructions are included. It is the same software-based format professional workshops work from.
We recommend a desktop or laptop that supports virtual machines. On a Mac it needs an Intel-based model, because Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later) cannot run it. Working from a phone or tablet? Look for a PDF manual for your model instead.

Yes. The S400 Hybrid, E300 and E400 Hybrid, and ML450 Hybrid have no charging cable. Their batteries are charged by the engine and by braking.
All of them recover energy when braking. Plug-in hybrids get most of their charge from an outlet or wallbox.
Yes. It is the same plug-in hybrid, sold as the GLE 500e in some markets and the GLE 550e in the US.
